3.0 out of 5 stars One of the best portable ACs, still not perfect, July 15, 2007
By
This review is from: Soleus Air LX-140, 14,000 BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner, 12,000 BTU Heater, Dehumidifier and Fan (Kitchen)
Updated 6/2012.

Update and RIP: Sadly, in 2011 my Soleus died. The main issue was that the compressor stopped switching on...the fan would blow, but no more cooling. Secondly, the exhaust tubes became brittle and then completely fell apart, unspiraling like some cartoon prop.

The death of the unit prompted me to come in and update the review. I'm knocking the product one star because of how long it lasted. I used it about twenty times per summer over three years, and that's not a great lifespan for a unit that costs this much. Additionally, Soleus still makes machines with the same exhaust hoses, but you can't easily buy replacements (I found some on eBay for $140 per set.) because they're plastic with a metal wire core, they're only going to last so long before cracking and failing. This being the case, I really expect the manufacturer to offer a replacement set for $50 or less.

This is still a good unit for those who have no other alternatives. But... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Soleus - don't throw away your money, January 7, 2009
This review is from: Soleus Air LX-140, 14,000 BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner, 12,000 BTU Heater, Dehumidifier and Fan (Kitchen)
I paid $600 for Soleus PH4-12R portable a/c + heatpump. I was very happy for about three months, seemed to perform to specs. I even posted a very favorable review. But then it revealed it's true colors.

After about 3 months the blower developed a rubbing or bearing noise, transforming the unit to near intolerable.

After 5 months the unit simply went dead, not even any lights on the controls. Yes, wall outlet has power.

Soleus warranty requires me to ship unit two directions to CA for warranty service. Troublke is, warranty does not cover shipping. After an estimate to pack for shipping = $50, and shipping the 100# unit two directions by UPS for $150 each, my "warranty" repair is $350. They have no service centers except their factory.

If I ship back, I will have invested $950 in this unit which has already proven it has no reliability. And there is no guarantee that they will not find some arcane reason to honor the warranty, despite my... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Best I've owned, July 11, 2010

This review is from: Soleus Air LX-140, 14,000 BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner, 12,000 BTU Heater, Dehumidifier and Fan (Kitchen)
Before buying a portable air conditioner, it helps to understand what you can expect and not expect from it. There is no way it will provide the cooling of central air, ductless air or even a really good window unit. I have owned all of these and speak from experience. However, when you move into a condo with all kinds of restrictions about what can be visible from the exterior or constraints on the architectural structure, then the portable is the best answer.

I have owned 4 of these and three different brands. My condo has three separate major spaces, 2 smaller for bedroom suite and office/den. The main living space is larger than the max recommended for any 120 volt unit, and that is where I now have the Soleus LX140.

The two smaller spaces are cooled with GE 10,000 BTU units that I have had for 5 years. HE quit making these units the year after I bought them They are quiet and have held up and keep the spaces in the upper 70s when the ambient temperature is... Read more

blackfriday,SPT SF-610 Portable Evaporative Air Cooler with Ionizer

Customer Rating :
Rating: 2.6

List Price : $111.00 Price : $71.50

  • Versatile lightweight air cooler can also be used as a fan or humidifier
  • Uses much less energy than an air conditioner
  • 120 volts; 60 watts
  • Remote control included
  • 12 x 9.45 x 28.4 inches; 17 pounds; limited 1-year warranty
Rating: 2.6

Product Description

This Evaporative Air Cooler, Humidifier, and Fan is versatile, lightweight and economical. The Cooler easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in your house or office. This Air Cooler shoots a stream of air with oscillating louvers, to evenly distribute refreshing cool air. Can also be used as a fan or humidifier if temperature is not an issue. - plus get the air cleaning benefits of the ionic air purifier. The remote control allows you to easily change settings. The Air Cooler works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat), so this evaporative Air Cooler sucks air through a wick saturated with water. As the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that was in the air. An air stream is then blown out the front of the unit and is considerably cooler than the current room temperature! This is not an air conditioner and therefore uses much less energy. The unit works well in dry climates; not very effective in areas with high humidity as the unit utilizes water to cool.

This review is from: SPT SF-610 Portable Evaporative Air Cooler with Ionizer (Kitchen)
There are so many things wrong with this unit that I'm surprised I've managed to remember them all. Some other reviewers have touched base on them already, but here are the details:

* You put water and/or ice in the top of the unit; you cannot put water where the ice is and vice-versa. The area where you pour water into is about 3x2 inches in size (yes, really!), while the area for ice is about 7x3 inches. You literally need a funnel or a small plastic tube to fill the unit up with water (see below). But it gets worse...

* Easily the biggest flaw: the water/melted ice goes down a tube and literally into the casing of the unit! There is no water tank, or centralized hold for liquids. The entire bottom of the unit is the "tank", if you can even call it that.

* The two cooling packs provided contain some sort of cheap coolant liquid inside of them -- they do cool quite well, but here's the problem: they're physically too large. The cooling packs... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Fine as a fan, but doesn't cool, July 2, 2007
By

This review is from: SPT SF-610 Portable Evaporative Air Cooler with Ionizer (Kitchen)
It has everything you want of a fan - timer, 3 speed, variable direction, remote control, but don't think this will in any way reduce the temperature in the room - at best you get a fan with built-in humidifier.
It comes with ice packs, but using these doesn't make any difference either, and good luck getting them back out after using them - the hole you have to drop them in is the same size as the ice pack, so once you get your hand in there and get a grip on them, you can't get your hand back out.

Update: Died after less that two years.

Even living somewhere where it is very low humidity (usually less than 10%) it does not cool enough to make it worth the noise. The noise actually kept me up at night. Get a normal fan instead - it will work better in the long run.

  • 3 Speed fan
  • R-410A Refrigerant for increased efficiency and reliability
  • Auto-Mode and Sleep Modes available
  • 4-Way directional louvers
  • Remote control
Rating: 4.3

Product Description

Our evaporative portable a/c unit offers a 38.4 pint dehumidifier that reduces unwanted moisture using our unique evaporative process, by removing moisture from the air and drips onto the condenser. The condenser evaporates the water and exhaust it out of the exhaust hose with the hot air. If the water is not fully evaporated it is dripped into a small pan and then pumped back up to be evaporated by the condenser. Features a programmable timer that shuts the unit on/off and remembers all settings, along with a sleep mode that automatically increases set temperature to conserve energy. LCD remote control operates and displays all settings. The single hose exhaust system provides quick spot cooling and 3 speed fan with 4 way adjustable louvers for increased circulation. Also includes a washable and reusable air filter that reduces dust and other airborne particles, and heavy duty casters attached for easy portability. More powerful, more reliable and more energy efficient.

4.0 out of 5 stars Small for a portable, works great., June 8, 2012
By
This review is from: SoleusAir 8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner, Evaporative Single Hose, # KY-80 (Misc.)
I found mine locally for $250, and figured that's a pretty good price for a portable. We needed something small and efficient for a warm upstairs bedroom. Since our windows crank out I couldn't easily use the window kit. Instead, I installed the unit in a closet and put a hole through the house to vent it outside. The hole (and outside vent cover) is directly behind the exhaust port and minimal tubing was needed to vent. That way it sits close to the wall and there's no clumsy hose (6" diameter hose!) taking up space.

I like that portables are quieter and generally more energy-efficient than cheaper window units. However, it's still an air conditioner and there is still compressor noise. The 4-speed fan on low is quiet enough, but the compressor still has to turn on and off so there will be some disturbance for light sleepers. I use ear plugs anyway, so no prob.

Operationally I've had no trouble keeping the bedroom as cool as I need (about 72 degrees)considering... Read more

This is my 2nd Portable AC...I wrote an extensive review about the first one I bought in 2006 that goes into details about the problems with all PAC's...so understand that my first experience set the bar pretty low. Also, the reason we own a PAC is to supplement the building's central air system that has a way of breaking down on hot, humid weekends, so it is not used as our primary cooling device but just in emergency situations to cool our 180 sq ft bedroom. During the hot spell last week when the central system went kaput, the old Whytner was making funny noises and overheating so we threw it out...here is a link to that review if you want to read it:

This air conditioner is working well in a 17 by 19 bedroom, but the window kit could be better.

If you keep it in one room its fine, but don't expect to move it easily froom room to room.
