2.0 out of 5 stars Makes it cooler...not colder, July 2, 2012

Recently we've had a heat wave here on the east coast. Unfortunately for me my fire escape is right outside my living room window and i'm not allowed to block it with anything...no plants, AC, or window fans. I figured the window kit of a portable unit wouldn't be noticable (so far i'm right) I'm on the top floor of my building so i've been told portable units will not work well with the sun beating on the roof all day.
I took a chance because sitting on a leather sofa in 99 degrees isn't fun.
I'm glad to say that the delivery was 5 days via FedEx. The unit has a long (6') hose. It also takes water thru a very small opening located on the bottom of the unit. You don't need to fill it up with the cup that came with the unit but it does help drop the temperature and keeps the noise down. Speaking of noise, the unit isn't loud but it surely isn't quiet. For my home theater I would have the volume up to 20. The max it can go up to is 50. Now with the unit on I have to put it... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Setup - Works Well for a 250sq ft Bedroom, July 4, 2012

Experiencing a heat wave averaging 95-103 for 2 weeks so far and only relief (under 85) has been in the late evening... being on the top floor, SW corner unit with largest windows and balcony facing west, (blazing afternoon sun)... interior was staying at 83-88... ugh.

The 14,000 BTU unit I ordered from Costco.com was delayed by UPS... cancelled it due to that alone out of spite... lucky I was able to get 2 of these from CompUSA locally (tigerdirect.com)... every other (Home Depot, Menards, Lowes, Costco, etc) place was sold out of portable AC units.

It is smaller, and sized well for the bedroom and office... works well for limited spaces, and only took 10 minutes to setup. Surprised that it fit my tall sliding glass window wells perfectly.

I am generally a researcher and brand 'snob' so this was a risk for me... and worked out well. Reviews seem to indicate that some of the quality checks might not be there, but it looks like the product works well if... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not that easy to set up, July 7, 2012
By

This review is from: ArcticPro YPC-07C FAAC7 Portable Air Conditioner
First of all, my unit didn't come with the amount of foam tape the instructions said it did so I was confused about setting it up with the window kit. Secondly, the exhaust hose did not easily stay connected to the ends. I got frustrated when I broke a fingernail and then used duct tape to connect the ends.

Seems to cool well, but we'll see as I've not used it in our 100+ degree heat. I wanted something in our living area and to give our regular HVAC system a break.

The directions say nothing about putting water in the unit until an indicator light goes on so I'm glad for that tip. The manual could have been written better.

This portable A/C works great. I sincerely doubt that it will really cool a 450 sq ft area but it does a great job for my bedroom upstairs...which is all I was really concerned with. My bedroom measures 13' x 12' or 156 sq ft and it takes about an hour to get from 85 F to 69 F. Setting it up was a breeze. The only problem I had was with the window exhaust kit. The expandable PVC plastic window mount wasn't long enough to cover the entire height of my bedroom window...it's about 5 inches too short. I had to cover that space with a piece of plastic that I cut to fit and duct taped in place. One thing I don't like about this unit is the placement of the exhaust hose...it's in the back. Some units have it on the top of the unit so that you can place the unit almost flush against the wall. The back of my unit sticks out about a foot and a half from the wall which makes getting around it a slight pain in the rear...but hey, at least I'll be cool this summer :). Another con...it doesn't... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleek cooling, June 18, 2010
This review is from: Whynter ARC-12S 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner, Platinum (Kitchen)
So it's been hot and yes I've been cheap, but after a month of unrelenting humidity and heat, I finally gave in and got myself this Whynter portable unit. In part recommended by a friend and part cos I'm love clean designs. It came in a tall serious looking box and I was able to unpack and hook it up relatively fast. The unit itself was a nice metallic finish. Now for the real test. Temperature as reported on in the last hr was 87degrees. Turned the unit on high and set it to 70degrees. The room that I'm cooling is not huge but has about an additional 25sqft of closet space that I'm trying ot cool as well, so that's about 280-300 sqfeet of area and 12ft high ceilings. Stood in front of the unit for awhile to cool down. It felt very reassuringly cold. Definitely was working away.

Left the room for about 35-40 mins and when I returned, it was definitely way more comfortable. I would estimate that it was close to 76degrees. That cooling rate was trememdously better than the 2... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars It Really Works but with One Flaw..., August 9, 2010
This review is from: Whynter ARC-12S 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner, Platinum (Kitchen)
This portable A/C has received excellent reviews based on its performance, high EER efficiency, and eco-friendly designs. I have had it for two weeks and it really works! The only issue I have with this A/C is the design of its vents. The vents only allow left/right adjustment; not up/down. Cool air come straight out. If you set the unit on the floor, the cool air can only reach below your waist! How can the unit efficiently cool the space with cool air staying down low? I have to set the unit on a table. Other brands have vents on top and adjustable. I consider this a major design flaw and needs to be corrected.

,ClimateRight CR-2550 Mini Outdoor Portable Air Conditioner and Heater

Customer Rating :
Rating: 5.0

List Price : Price : $548.99

  • Remote Control
  • AUTO Mode switches from cool-to-heat automatically
  • New heavier duty construction
  • Recommended Application Pet Houses, Small RV Trailers,Camping Tents and any small outdoor enclosures
  • Cooling Capacity 2500 btu Heating Capacity 1800 btu
Rating: 5.0

Product Description

Climate Right CR-2550 Mini is a deluxe, heavy duty, long lasting portable electric air conditioner and heater combo made for small outdoor enclosed spaces.

Measure the size of your enclosure in feet (LxWxH). Climate Right CR-2550 Mini works for 5-350 cubic feet spaces. It is a highly unique product that is perfect for heating or cooling enclosed spaces like dog or cat houses (assembly kit included), tear drop trailers, enclosed tents, small work sheds - you name it! Simply hook up the 2-hose air intake and outflow hoses into your enclosure. (Hook up kit included. Some applications may require some customization). The beauty of this unit is its low BTU power, which is a gentle and easy air flow and gradual acclimatization - not too harsh for humans or animals in a small space. It works year around. It both heats and cools. No other units can say that. Unit sits outside in the weather no problem. Low power consumption right right off your 115v wall socket, generator or Shore Power.

Installation is easy. Unit comes with Assembly Kit including everthing you need (except drill) to install your unit. Installation involves simply porting the 2 air intake and outtake hoses from the ClimateRight into your structure. For buildings and sheds, we recommend boring two holes at the bottom of one wall, connecting the hoses, and then setting your ClimateRight outside the enclosure on a level surface. If your application does not allow holes to be bored (like a tent), you still must somehow port the 2-hose stystem into your enclosure. Applications and installations may vary.

Safe and environmentally friendly with no carbon monoxide or fluorocarbon emissions. Climate Right CR-2550 Mini can be set to 62-88 degrees Fahrenheit. Results vary based on insulation of the enclosure, and ambient heat and humidity conditions. Unit designed to improve ambient air temperature conditions, but not to an exact tolerance. Climate Right is the ultimate "creature comfort".

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing performance, July 10, 2012
This review is from: ClimateRight CR-2550 Mini Outdoor Portable Air Conditioner and Heater (Misc.)
This AC unit does wonderful for cooling small structures! I use it to cool my Tropical Carnivorous plants (Nepenthes) and so far it has done a good job. The only reason they call this a "dog house" cooler is to gain buyers because who doesn't have a dog? This makes the perfect plant AC unit and is wonderful for you orchid and Nepenthes growers out there. The unit barely consumes any energy and can be set to run certain hours that are the hottest in your area. If the outside temp is less than the inside temp during running time, then it will go into a sort of stand-by mode while still cooling. Sorry dog owners, but this is a laugh in the face if you don't grow Highland plants or have a doghouse that is completely sealed with a door. Perfect for those server rooms, too. The temp went from 80-70 degrees in 5 minutes of running on stand-by! I certainly recommend this if your cooling space is sealed. If not then its a big waste of money. (should last for years too)
