I purchased the original Handy a few weeks ago and decided I liked it so much I would get a second to keep in the car and thought I'd try a cheaper version. First impression was it was identical, but on closer inspection it is more cheaply made and a side by side comparison revealed the Handy put out noticeably more air. However, it is compatible with the AC plug and extension tube I bought for the Handy and does provide a significant cooling effect.

I'll still reach for the Handy on really hot days, but as a cheap alternative I think this is satisfactory.

Not a strong fan, the sponge did have a weird sulfur smell. After wash it with dish washing liquid, it seems to be ok. Soak & freeze the sponge, take it out when needed. That seems to work relatively well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't cool the air, May 31, 2012

This review is from: Small Portable Fan & Mini-Air Conditioner:Runs on batteries or USB. (Personal Computers)
I was hopeful for this product, but tried not to be too hopeful. I knew I shouldn't expect too much for less than $12.
My main use for it was going to be in my car. My car gets very hot inside when I turn the car off to run in somewhere. I thought I could reduce the gas used in my car by the AC if I didn't have to blast it to cool the car back down every time I run in somewhere for 15 minutes.

Long story short, this doesn't cool the air at all. Especially not to the 30 degrees as stated in the description. The easiest way I proved this was by letting the air blow directly on my face with a wet sponge inside, then removing the sponge and just letting the fan blow air on my face. There was no difference in temperature at all. I even had a few friends help me compare it and they also said they couldn't tell a difference with or without the sponge.

I also tried freezing the sponge as some other people had suggested. Still no difference. In fact, this just makes... Read more

SPT SF-608R Portable Evaporative Air Coolerbest

Customer Rating :
Rating: 3.1

List Price : $139.99 Price : $71.00

  • Evaporative air cooler, humidifier, and fan for cooling and humidifying
  • Uses water to cool the air; oscillating louvers for even distribution
  • 10-liter water tank; 3 air speeds; sleep mode; 1/2- to 7-1/2-hour timer
  • Air flow of 23 feet per second; nylon and photocatalystic filter; remote control
  • Measures 12 by 16 by 25 inches; 1-year warranty

Product Description

This Evaporative Air Cooler, Humidifier, and Fan is versatile, lightweight and economical. The Cooler easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in your house or office. This Air Cooler shoots a stream of air with oscillating louvers, to evenly distribute refreshing cool air. Can also be used as a fan or humidifier if temperature is not an issue. The remote control allows you to easily change settings. The Air Cooler works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat), so this evaporative Air Cooler sucks air through a wick saturated with water. As the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that was in the air. An air stream is then blown out the front of the unit and is considerably cooler than the current room temperature! This is not an air conditioner and therefore uses much less energy. The unit works well in dry climates; not very effective in areas with high humidity as the unit utilizes water to cool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive cooling, September 1, 2007

First off, this is NOT an air conditioner. If you expect your room to be freezing cold, this is not the product for you. It's a COOLER, and it does its job very well. It works by evaporating water. Try soaking a T-shirt, wringing it out, and putting it on wet to get the effect. It doesn't work very well in humid areas, but it works GREAT where the air is dry.
I'm in southern California, where the humidity varies pretty widely. I place the cooler six or eight feet from my chair, and on the hottest days I'm quite comfortable.
Benefits:
* it's about 1/5 the cost of an air conditioner
* operating expense is a fraction of the cost of air conditioning
* neat features! (timer, sleep function, etc.)
* remote control

Drawbacks:
* it's not freezing cold like air conditioning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Effective, July 14, 2006

Low price, very effective in low humidity. Has a strong fan when not using the cooling feature. Timer works well. Has an oscillating feature, a "sleep" mode and, most importantly: a drain plug, washable filter element and a plastic body that cannot rust like those made of sheet metal or tin.

It's been in the high 90s to the low 100's here in the San Fernando Valley in CA with low humidity and it's kept whatever room it is in cool enough to not have to turn on the AC.

It's no air conditioner, but it's a low in cost [to purchase and to run]alternative you could even say was an "eco-friendly" way to stay comfortable in the summer. But then, my friends had to talk me out of buying a wringer washing machine, so my opinion is based on my personal preference for simplicity and old fashioned ways of doing things.

Take my review as you will. It does what it says it will. If you have frequent high humidity, it won't be effective and the company tells you that so... Read more

This is a FABULOUS product. I based my purchase on the reviews of this item. I had a similar product a few years ago and it doesnt compare to this as well as the other one being almost double this price. The cooler came a day PRIOR to the estimated delivery date.WOW........I live in Acampo California which is north of Lodi CA and south of Sacramento CA. The degrees outside at 5:40 pm is 93 degrees, the temperature inside of the house is 84 degrees and my bedroom (which is where I have my cooler) is 72 degrees. I use a pitcher of ice water from my fridge to fill it up and ice cubes in the top tray. For those of you that are young or have not had the experience of a "swamp cooler", they tend to have a musty smell to them. I solved this problem by purchasing a Glade Car oil fragrencer(?). It is intended to clip on the vents of your heating/air conditioning unit. I clip mine on the bottem lever of the cooler on the lowest setting and it gives off a slight fragrance with no musty smell... Read more

This review is from: Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner (ARC-14S) (Kitchen)
I got this to supplement the window unit I've been using for years and ended up just completely replacing the window unit.
Very robotic design, it stands around 3ft tall and is in fact rather slim once you take it out of the packaging. Came with all the necessary accessories to get it running immediately. Hooking it up and putting the hot air vent where my window A/C used to be was extremely straightforward.

We usually power it up after my daughter returns from pre-school and set the temperature to around 74F. It usually shuts off at about 2am when the room and outside temps are nice and comfortable. The air is extremely cold around the unit and gets a good sized room down to a nice temp really fast. It seems very quiet during the day with all the other sounds and my daughter has slept like a baby ever since we got it. I does emit a low hum when it's cooling but otherwise the fan sound is not noticeable to me. You can turn it on high for a few minutes but after... Read more

This review is from: Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner (ARC-14S) (Kitchen)
This has been a lifesaver during hot summer days. I agree with the negative reviews about it being noisy, but I have it in my bedroom and I got used to it after 2 nights. I sleep through it now. The LED is also very bright, but not so much that it keeps me awake. I took off a star because of the useless window mount. The hoses weren't long enough for it to reach my window, so I went to Home Depot to build a rig. Replacement hoses are EXPENSIVE, so I didn't buy them. The screws are very short and pop right out of the cheap plastic mount, so I'm using tape to hold them in place. I have since moved and now have casement windows, so I'm in the process of building a new mount in which I will screw the hoses directly into a piece of plexiglass which will sit in the window. I've read that this will work fine, so I'm not concerned about it. One of the negative reviews I read about this unit is that it failed to cool the space. It is designed to cool roughly 600 square feet (a small... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent AC even in Florida, April 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner (ARC-14S) (Kitchen)
I have a canopy tent and use it often during the summers here in Florida. I got this unit to provide a bit of repost to the heat/humitity and it did a wonderful job.

What caught my eye about this product was the low amp/voltage use. I connected a amp/volt monitor and discovered it pulled about 9.73 amps, a little lower than the 10.5 I saw in the user manual.

I connect a drain tube, so I can't comment on how quickly the water repository fills up. I do say it is the coldest portable AC unit I have ever used.

Defiantly a good buy.
