I have 3500 square feet house in Central Florida and top of the line heat pump Central Air just installed a few years ago. All works perfect except one thing: I have to cool the entire house with it and at 4500 Watts in case of power down my diesel generator at 6500 Watts is just about running it when 1100 Watts refrigerator and lights are on at the same time. Another thing is Central Air conditioner will get you over 250 bucks electric bill during summer and this is when thermostat is set to only 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Now, I ordered this unit thinking it is going to be so-so portable that can subsidize cooling now and then. The unit came in UPS, it is about 84 lbs, has wheels, is very quiet, does wonders drying the air, very nice quality built and components, remote, digital thermostat, can be converted to auto drain with just additional hose if you really must, runs on 1100 Watts, and is pleasant to look at. At 9000 BTU it is very nice... There was an odd odor the first couple of times that we turned it on - a plastic smell would be the best way to describe it. After about a week, my husband called (909) 468-5288 and left a message (no one returned the call). Later that day he called (800)330-0388 and spoke with a women who told him that as long as it was blowing cold air there was not a freon leak. She mentioned that the smell may be attributed to the styrofoam packing inside the machine. We just assumed that it smelled odd because it was new. We used it four or five times for maybe 3 hours each time. Well today is 7/6/10 and it hit 100 degrees outside; there is no longer any smell BUT THERE IS NO LONGER ANY COLD AIR BLOWING OUT OF THE MACHINE. I have sent an email to Sunpentown through the Amazon site. I want everything in writing with regard to how to get this 80lb piece of crap back to them. The financial burden should not be mine after... (Temps have been in the high 90s here in Northern Virginia). The unit is fairly quiet given the size. It has carrying handles on the side that made it easy to lug up our 3 flights of stairs. The unit must be vented to the outside to release the heat. The hose was of moderate length and the adapter piece for the window was adequate. We had to cut it to fit our window. We also had to make a trip to Home Depot to purchase insulating foam and tape to help hold it in place and plug the air leaks. We have the unit in a small bedroom and it blows cool air into the hallway, a distance of about 7 feet. As far as water accumulating in the unit, we haven't had much. In our house it's about half full after running it for an entire day. This may change when the humidity comes back. I am very happy we purchased this unit. We have been running it for 5 days and so far I would... Read more |
